I live with a family (1 adult 3 kids) who are all slobs. They leave dishes in the sink, dirty laundry on the stairs, clutter everywhere. I don't want to clean up after them. I think the common areas should be clean; the kitchen, bathroom, entry, living room, dining room. I don't care how they keep their other rooms. Help me find a way to improve this situation.

Let everyone know how dirty they are and how you guys should get into a routine of cleaning like 30 minutes a day. I would also suggest giving one chore for each person to do. One person gets the bathroom, and another gets the living room, and another the kitchen.

Unfortunately, I don't think all the best idea's in the world are going to help with this one. When I was 21, I had three roomates. They were ALL slobs. And not a one of them ever lifted a finger to do any cleaning whatsoever. It was tough to get anyone to even start the dishwasher up, let alone load their own plates into it or god forbid, unload it. There were constantly dirty dishes in the sink. Clothes on the floor. Dusting and vacuming were definitely out. After finding myself sick to death of cleaning up after them, I finally moved. Sounds like an extreme, but my guess is, you are just going to end up frustrated in this case. A cleaning lady once every week or two will not help. Because people like this will just junk the place up as soon as she leaves. So you will have like 1/2 day of clean before the tornado hits again. I personally couldn't live with it.

I had two roomates like this when I first moved out of my parent's house. I know what a nightmare it is, because I like things CLEAN!! I did all the cleaning, dish washing, etc. (We did not have a dishwasher). They would not even fill up the ice trays - just used all the ice from them and put them back into the freezer empty. Pissed me off no end, finally I moved out.

There is a site in which the lady calls herself the cleaning slob. She recommends that everyone in the household spend 15 minutes every morning and evening cleaning as much as they can, and then the rest of the day is theirs. I highly recommend it. My daughter, husband and I can have the house completely straight and head out the door in 15 minutes and we don't have to come home to a filthy house.

Time for a family meeting. If we cannot clean up, then we need to find money for a cleaning service. When my kids were quite young I had a lady come and clean every other Wednesday. Tuesday nights, everyone picked up their stuff
because it made her job easier. She was there to clean,
not to pick up after us. You need to get the adult on board, then the kids will follow. Have you heard of Flylady.netGood Luck!

It is up to the Slobs to change their behavior and clean up after themselves. I do not know of any way to accomplish the chaining of others behavior. Ask them if they are willing? If not you either clean your own area and live there, or the other choice is: move to your own place, if possible, and leave the slobs to live in their own place.

Move. You are living intheir house at their discretion. There isn't a single thing you can do that will change how they keep their house. They will make you more miserable if you try to make them change.
