Check out the Sci-Fi/Fantasy section as well as the mystery section of your local chain bookstore like Borders or Barnes and Noble. Spend some time reading the book back covers and find what you like before you buy. Some books start so slow that I had a hard time getting into them, but once I did they started rolling along and made perfect sense before the end. Check out Charles Stoss' alternate world books. Or S.M. Stirling's book Conquistador(sequel coming soon) or his series that begins with Dies The Fire. Both authors put out exceptional books. If you like thrillers there is(in my opinion) no better author than Matthew Reilly. He is in the process right now of writing or finishing the screenplay for his book Contest, then will finish the script for Ice Station another book he wrote who will star George Clooney in the movie version. Enjoy!

Anything by Eoin Colfer. I personally loved Philip Pullman's Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass) and Tamora Pierce can be entertaining. She writes about sheroes and magical kids.

My best friend told me that Pop Princess was really good.[ I haven't read it yet.] One of my favorite books is Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. It's a love story. I recommend it.
