It depends on the cost for teminating your current contract.
Read the fine print of your current agreement.
It can cost $200 or more to get out of it. Sometimes it just makes sense to stick with what you have until the contract is finished.
Sometimes a carrier will buy out your old contract to get you as a juicy new customer, if you only have a few months left.
If your contract is finished look on the web for the best deals to start a new contract with another carrier.
and then Print it out and show it to them if you can't activate online and switch your number.
Whatever you do GET it in Writing. People will say and promise anything to get as a new cell phone customer.

It will cost: 29.95 for disconnection of your old phone. another 19.95 for connection of the new phone, unless your using the same phone to connect to a new line, that's another 5.95 recovery fee. Now if your using the same line to connect to a new phone, you will have to pay a 10.95 service fee plus a 19.95 usage fee. If either of the services are on at the same time, you will have to pay a 5.00 duplication charge for each day that this occurs. This charge is prorated on a per week basis. Once the change has taken place you will have a 6.95 maintenance duration fee added to your first three months of service. Of course all of this means that you will have to renew your original 2 year contract starting on the date that the maintenance duration fee is finalized.
In 6 months, the phone company will send you a contract to sign over an arm of your choosing, your left leg and half of your first born.

technically free. But there are many hidden costs like ending your service before the specified timelimit if you have a contract. So be careful make sure you read your contract or call yur phone company and ask them what will happen they should tell you.
