Ze_Blue is right. It's just too much extra work to change the clothes of characters. The animation process is long enough as it it. Also, it is not just anime. Practically all cartoon characters (no matter the origin) keep the same clothes, though it depends on the occasion. For instance (I'll use anime here): Most japanese schools use uniforms, so many teenage characters will be seen in the same thing at school. If you see them outside of school, however, they will wear "street" clothes. In many anime I've seen, those will actually vary.
To sum up my main answer, however, the clothes stay the same most of the time to save time and energy. Also, practically all cartoons do this, not just anime ones. Hoped this helped.

It would be time consuming for animators to constantly change their apparel. Plus, the outfits that you see a character wear is pretty much their trademark look. At times you will see a character change their appearance (i.e. Sha Gojyo of the Saiyuki series, slight change of clothing for Cho Hakkai and Son Goku of Saiyuki, Ash Ketchum of Pokemon, etc) but that is to the descretion of the mangaka.

It is too much for the animators to do to have people have different clothes all the time. That is why you see some cartoons or animes where the people have like 3 or 4 fingers(Simpsons)because it is easier and quicker to draw it like that.Plus while you are on a deadline each week you would do the same.

Child, Bleach.
And I don't mean Ishida.
(Archer guy that other guy was talking about).
Anyways, when Ichigo is in the real world, he wears different clothes on weekends and whenever he's out of school.
However, it is the same set of clothes, thus showing he has an actual wardrobe.
(He can't spontaneously creat new shirts. He'll wear it. Wash it. Wear another one. And wear the first again. Just with more clothes.)

i think they dont change their clothes cuz the writers dont really focus on the characters clothes. The writers focus more on the romance and action. Thats why Animes are so great

Because the creator of anime character just feels that it's frustrating. How would you feel if you had to constantly change their clothes so that it made sense?

Not true, for example in bleach the archer dude (name escapes me at this stage) does a costume change when he releases his full power battling that death god.
I think what you need to watch is barbie cartoons, they change their clothes (im guessing anyway)

i think maybe they don't change just because it gives the viewer a sense of commonality...this way they don't have to figure out if it's the same person they thought it was the last time they saw it... on bleach and ouran high they change their clothes...so maybe it's just easier for the illustrator...who knows. ^_^
