I heard something about not allowing smoking in movies anymore, and I'm wondering if this also applies to books.

My protagonist is a smoker. He doesn't glorify it or make it seem 'cool'. He's trying to quit, but it's easier said than done.

Book and movie audiences are two separate things. If you're writing a novel meant for adults I doubt it would influence a child who won't read your book (at least until he's older) to smoke.

In publishing, it's all about writing talent. And yes connections or someone with name recognition. If you have the talent and you want to have your character smoke, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. There should be a reason, however, in the story why he smokes.

Smoking won't affect your chances of getting published unless it's a children's book. Adults CAN make up their minds about smoking.

Well, they can't just not allow smoking movies because of the whole first amendment and everything (I'm assuming this is the US)

And I highly doubt it would diminish your chances of getting published

it sounds like it would be okay, since you're not making smoking seem cool.
if you already have a publisher, ask them about it.
