What Universe?

For all you know your mind is the Universe.

Christians believe that God created man in His own image. That could be what is meant by that statement.

Call it the Universe and assume it created Man in it's own image and the mind is that image.

Or vice versa.

The Mind could have created the Universe in its own image and made you think it was the otherway around to have the Universe distract you from the fact that this is all there is to life.

Twisted isn't it?

I think the key to your question is the word "tool". Tool implies that it has to be used to be of service. How does the universe use the tool? It is obvious, as stated how the mind uses the tool but not so obvious how the universe uses the tool. Why does the mind's opinion matter to the universe? What would the universe's motivation be in being recognized?

This question seems to presuppose that the universe questions its own existence. Once again, like man.

But for some reason, that makes no sense to be infinite and doubt your own existence. Infinity should know itself. Doubts should exist but answers should be there to quell them.

Nice paradox.

But to know the answer is to admit to being the universe and I am not willing to go there.

Emerging from the Substances of the Universe, would be one way of looking at it - though unfortunately it has turned into a much abused and prostituted "New Agey" kind of notion by now. Not to mention, The Universal Mind Invention Project (in the form of humanity, at least) has proved to be a miserable failure so far.

There is no self, there is no I, there is no spirit, there is no soul, and there is no mind. That knocks off the whole list, and you have no way of finding out what you are left with. You may very well ask me the question, "Why do you go on telling people about the way you are functioning?" It is only to emphasize that we have been for centuries using some instrument, that is, thinking or mind, or whatever you want to call it, to free ourselves from the whole of what you call the 'I' or the 'self', and all kinds of things. That is what the whole quest of spirit is all about. But once it dawns on you that there is nothing to be free from, then these questions don't arise at all. How that dawned on me, I have no way of finding out for myself

The knowledge you have of the world creates the objects you are experiencing. The actual existence or non-existence of something "out there" in the world is not something you can determine or experience for yourself, except through the help of your knowledge. And this knowledge is not yours; it is something which you and your ancestors have accumulated over a long time. What you call the "act of knowing" is nothing other than this accumulated memory. You have personally added to and modified that knowledge, but essentially it doesn't belong to you at all.
There is nothing there inside you but the totality of this knowledge you have accumulated.

That is what you are. You cannot even directly experience the reality of the world in which you are functioning, much less some world beyond. There is no world beyond space and time. It is your invention, based upon the vague promises of the holy men. Our sense of value springs from the world as it is imposed on us. We must accept the world

I do not believe the Universe sees itself or creates any tools for that purpose. Our individual perceptions do not seem to have any significant effect on the operation of the Universe.

The mind is the tool that controles the body.Body itself is designed by mind. Voluntary & involuntary actions are governed by mind, the CONSCIOUSNESS. Five stages of consciousness are in mind to see this Universe

It appears that way, no pun intended. The Universe began with the appearance of energy that can clump together and form bundles that formed particles of matter that can form nebulas and suns and planets and life. Energy organizes itself into increasingly more complex arrangements, culminating, as far as we know about at this time, in the ultimate complexity of nervous tissue . . .sensory perception, which, we humans have used to reorganize sand into glass then into polished lenses with which to peer back at the creation with a recent image of when all that energy first appeared. WHY energy forms this perceptionary loop, is the question of the hour.

LORD Z has again given an excellent answer. Being of silly disposition this evening, I was simply going to say:
If the universe needed to see itself, I would seriously hope it would NOT be through our little minds.
Thoughtful answers--to which I need add nothing but my humour.

Yes, Universe has created the Human beings to carry the message... I am giving you a tool called mind, use it to enjoy me... but mind is making misuse of the tool itself.
When the global warming is resulting as end of its misuse one gets a feeling that Universe has also given Freedom .. make yourself or unmake yourself.

Your question is very intriguing, and loaded with both obvious meaning, as well as deep undercurrents of belief.
Of course, it would be impossible to answer "yes" or "no" definitively, but I love to ponder the question myself. I have read several books that approach the question through the eyes of physicists, mystics, and psychologists, and I am still reading, exploring, questioning. A good book that addresses just that question is "Self Aware Universe" by Amit Goswami (he was one of the people in 'What the Bleep Do We Know'). He believes the answer to your question is yes. As for me, I am still exploring....
