Is it not really strenuous to try to be special? What drives you? Can you be peacefully ordinary or not?

Many people in America want to be special or superior to others. (At least this is what I read in an article) They do not want to disappear into the crowd.
In Australia it is different. They often think in the following way: " Don`t be a tall poppy because tall poppies get their heads cut off."
Apparently both want to be something other then they ordinarily are.

As I got older I realized that 'being special' was just a game, and that true success at the pinnacle would understand that such things are not important. It is the heart and reality of what you are that matters, not the recognition you receive.

Ordinary, depending on your definition of it, could well be loathsome :)) If by ordinary you mean: accepting "reality" and your "place in society" as programmed into you by your parents and "the powers that be". A total brainwashing job to keep you in the dark and disempowered, so that you'll be a good little docile clone and worker-robot.

By that definition i'd never go for it, and haven't; but many do, in the interests of security and "getting ahead". A soulless exercise in being barely alive.

Have some courage and follow your "intuition" on what's right for you, no matter what the lemmings say or do. :))) Be in the perhaps 5% ? of the species that has some guts, without being a criminal.

More or less on point see http://www.educate-yourself.org and http://montalk.net

What is ordinary? I'm important. Is that ordinary? I suggest letting go of the need to know the difference between ordinary and extraordinary. Perhaps the best way to human is committ mindless acts of kinds. What is ordinarily cruel and mean-spirited can be replace with thoughtfulness and kindness. What we decide is ordinary can truly be quite exceptional. "And this above all; to thine ownself be true." After all, nothing, absolutely nothing is more important than self-trust, and ordinarily I say this to my students who believe in God. Once a student said he would leave what he (the student) needed to say to someone else up to God. I asked the student if he believed that God had created him, and the student said, "Yes. Of course." "And," I continued, "You trust what God creates?" "Yes," said the student. "Then can you trust yourself because God created you?" He hesitated for a moment, and then "Yes! I can!" Ordinarily such a moment is extraordinary, but with what wisdom and courage could we be empowered if only we trusted that which Our Creator has made us to be.

Exactly. The energy expended in willful pursuits of abstracted illusions away from one's true self is the ORDINARY path, the path of mediocrity. The more meaningful and challenging path is actually the one that honorably seeks the true and beautiful denuded nature of one's unique individuality.

In all honesty, I just try to be myself, special or ordinary. Why worry about upholding false characteristics? There is peace with the everyday me.

If I'm happy with myself, then yes. Why should you try to be something if you're already content? But sometimes, you don't want to be ordinary, you want to be the best. As long as you're doing it for yourself, I think it's okay.

:P is anyone truely ordinary? what are the set standards of ordinary. Since there are none, no one is ordinary ;) Why sould i be driven to be something? If i'm already that something, i wouldn't be driven to be it, because i'm already it ;) And if i wasn't, why would i strive to be it? lol, because it is "special" or "ordinary" LOL! What a pathetic excuse ;)
