You have a Morgan dollar. Morgan dollars were minted from 1878-1921, they were designed by George T. Morgan. So yours is the first year of issue. Does your coin have a mintmark? (look on the back of your coin under the wreath) If your coin grades VF-20 (very fine) the value would be around $25.00. If your coin grades EF-40 (extra fine) the value would be around $35.00. I hope this information helps answer your question.

It is not an easy question to answer and your best bet is a coin dealer or a coin club member. There are 5 1878 varieties from the Philadelphia mint. 1878-8 tail feathers, 1878 7 tail feathers, 1878 7 over 8 tail feathers, 1878 7 feathers 2nd reverse and 1878 7 feathers 3rd reverse. Then there are the coins minted in Carson City (CC) and San Francisco (S). The mint mark in on the reverse at the bottom below the wreath. So you see the first year on the Morgan dollar was not a smooth one. See a couple of coin dealers they should be able to tell you which one you have, if not they are not much of a dealer, so doing business with them is out of the question. Sorry I could not give you just a good old fashion straight answer.

what is the mint mark? what condition is your coin in? i'm sure your coin is a morgan silver dollar in circulated condition. the most desired mint mark in that year would probly be cc for carson city. s mark for san fransico would probly come next followed by no mint mark which means it was minted in philidelphia. an o mint mark would be from new orleans but i'm not sure if new orleans minted that year. 1878 was the first year for morgan dollars. check out www.pcgs.com for coin prices and othe information. i've got a respectable collection of silver dollars myself. i've got an uncirculated 1878 cc i payed $295 for. it's not graded but is a problem free coin. i've also got an 1878 s that is in almost uncirculated condition that i payed $18 for. this is an example of how coins can vary greatly in value depending on year/mint and condition.
