The pains you are feeling are the baby's head pressing on your pelvic floor, not contractions. Chances are the baby might have engaged and that's why you are feeling this now. It's very normal, although painful. You might feel it off and on until you get closer to labor.

what does it feel like? i always feel like the baby is trying to kick out of my uterus like he is hitting nerves right about my cervix or something. it's very uncomfortable and it kinda hurts. it often seems like i hold myself when he does it because it just the weirdest feel. i would say that i can tell the difference between that and contractions. my contractions feel more like really bad period cramps. and sometimes i can place my hand on the top of my belly and i get this balling up feeling. if they are coming and going on a regular basis like 10-15 minutes apart for at least an hour, i would suggest you call your doctor (at least that's what i've been told). each time i thought i might have been having contractions that are in some type of pattern, i went into the hospital and they hooked me up to this machine that measures the baby's heart rate and the intensity, regularity, and if you have contractions. so if you do call and they tell you to come in, they may do the same for you and they will actually be able to tell if they are regular or not. it could just be braxton hicks as well. i've always been told that when it comes down to this baby it's always better to be safe than sorry. so if you feel like anything is wrong, use your instincts, and give your doc a call. im sure they have had many women come in with symptoms and they get sent home. but like i said it's better to go get checked than to "think" and something goes wrong. best wishes to you.

Actual labor contractions will encompass the whole stomach area not just the crotch. What you are experiencing is the baby settling down into position to be born.

It is also possible that your cervix is dialating. During my first pregnancy I felt needles pricking me up inside of my vagina. I started dialating around 6 weeks early, but I only went into labor 12 days early. You should call your doctor just in case, and on your next visit, have him/her check your cervix. Good luck, I am 24 weeks!!
