It is not really possible for a 13 or a 15 year old to truly understand the long term consequences of being sexually active. Therefore, it is a parents responsibility to try to protect their children from themselves. However, I think that parents often focus more on being friends with their kids, or kind of turn them loose once they are at an age where they no longer need a parent to take care of their most basic needs. I've also seen parents with rebellious teens give up on their kids instead of working through the problems.

First off, they don't all think it will be easy. Saying that would mean it's planned, which it sometimes is, but that generally happens when there is an emotional trama at some point, or lack of attention. It also is attributed to early puberty. Teens are experiancing puberty at younger ages and therefor are hormone crazy at younger ages. Simpily saying that they should have sex unless they want a kid is also unreasonable, there are plenty of married couples having sex that don't want children. I do think that they should accept the consequenses of sex if they are going to have it. Really though, don't judge people. You don't know their situation. The girl you see at the mall or whatever who is 14 or 15 and pregnant could be a rape victum, and here you are thinking less of her for getting pregnant this way and not having an abortion. I know this isn't the case for most girls, but still, you are in no psition to judge them. Many teens work very hard to support their children, harder then some older people. So please stop and think about it a little the next time you chose to belittle a pregnant teen.

I'm not blaming these kids so much; I think you have to look back one generation to their parents (or parent, more likely). They're not getting raised to think that there's anything wrong with teens having sex. They are being raised with a complete lack of discipline and morals. I see questions all the time on here like, "My 14-year-old keeps sneaking out... what should I do?" Hello! These kids need stronger father figures in their lives. I didn't sneak out at night or knock up my girlfriend because I knew either my own or her father would probably castrate me.

They truly believe they're invincible. They think that pregnancy happens to OTHER teens and not them. Then when they do get pregnant they feel they are ready to take on the responsibility because any other option would be more shameful. They also believe the guy who got them pregnant will stay with them and help. Making decisions like abortion or adoption are too intense for a teenager when they are still so influenced by peer pressure and what people will think of them.

Lack of education from parents.
And the "oh it's ok , sweetie" attitude of the other adults. It's having a baby shower for a 14 year old. Why? She gets pregnant and we give her a party?...... that sure does show the other teenagers.
It's the parents that go...... sure I'll watch the baby while you go out with your friends.
It's the government that says...... "hey, have that baby.....I'll give you some free cash, and I'll even throw in an apartment"....... oh and even though your other classmates didn't get knocked up and quit school...I'll still pay for your education, but not theirs.

The messages we as society send out are horrendous.

I work at a center for pregnant teens and pregnant mothers, so I see it all. A number of factors normally combine to create a situation ending in teen pregnancy:
-young sexuality and first sexual experiences
-older boyfriends who swear they will "take care of everything"
-lack of family life
-feeling alone and wanting someone who will "love them" unconditionally
-early puberty
-later cognitive development (combined with above, and girls are unable to truly think about consequences of sex)
-drug and alcohol use leading to drunken, unprotected sex
-lack of available contraceptives
-embarassment at getting contraceptives
-lack of sexual education

The more things on this list that are present, the more likely young women are to get pregnant. It's sad, and everyone should talk to their kids about waiting to have sex until they are prepared to do so as safely as possible and suffer the possible consequences.

And yes, most of them think it is easy. Until they have a child and realize how hard it is.

Parents are too lazy to teach their kids not to have sex, or at least get on the pill and use a condom? Of course every effective method of discipling is considered child abuse now. If you don't agree with me tell me why kids are going around shooting each other and don't respect anyone?

Lack of parental responsibility. I hear about sex education in schools. I really don't think it is the schools responsibility to teach a child about sex. It is the responsibility of the parent. This is not a subject that can be ignored by parents because they feel uncomfortable.
