ok. say this happens.

2 teams in the same division finish w/ the same record, lets say 90-72. then, a nother third team from a different division(same league) finishes w/ that very same record. so, there r 3 teams w/ a record of 90-72, 2 teams in a 1st place tie in 1 division, a nother team in a nother division. IMPORTANT: the third team is NOT in 1st place in their division.

say now that these 3 teams r in a 3-way tie 4 the wild card. what happens?

does the 3rd team win the wild card & the other 2 teams tied 4 first just play a series 2 decide who advances? or do the teams tied 4 1st place just go, & whoevr has the better divisional record gets 1st, the wild card goes 2 the other? or sumthing else happens?

From a September 2006 MLB.com press release:

As a point of clarification, if three clubs finish the season with the same winning percentage and one team will be a division winner and another will be the Wild Card, the games will be played as follows:

• The two teams tied for the division lead will play the one-game tie-breaker, with the winner being declared the division champion.

• The losing team will then play the club from the other division for the Wild Card.

Ok here's ur brake down my man two teams have the same record in the same division goes to head to head match ups and u play each team in ur division 19 times so u cant have a tie there. Next u can not have the wild card play a team in there own division in the divisional series in champion series yes but in a DS so this is the brake down the wild card team would play the 3rd team with the same record but that team is a divisional champ and would have home field

This came close to happening in 2005, when the Yankees, Red Sox and Indians came down to the final weekend.

The Yankees clinched a playoff spot on Saturday, and didn't even know it. It was possible that Boston would play in NY on a Monday to determine the division winner, and the loser would go to Cleveland for the wild-card spot.

The Indians went into a slump, though, and the Yankees and Red Sox tied. New York won the season series and thus got the edge for the division. And both teams lost in the first round of the playoffs.

It's a little confusing but here's my take on what I read.

First, the division winner would be determined by head to head record between the two teams. If still tied a series of tiebreakers is followed until a winner is declared.

So, the loser of this tiebreaker is now tied for the wildcard with Team C and plays a one-game playoff to determine the wildcard berth.

Thats why each team plays every other team during the season at least for one series (3 games normally meaning there has to be a team with the better record against the other one). They would look at the record each team has against each other.

They go by who has the better record against one another.
