this is a tough one!! neither were sorry musicians..the JB's backed up James Brown and his funk family!! so anything James Brown was funk/soul/r&b/gospel...the Funk Brothers were the house band of MOTOWN Records!!! they played on the biggest hits in music ever!!..they were more mainstream, meaning they had crossed over to the white audiences..both are great bands..i like them all..but Im going with the JB's..because they brought in the funk music,,they along with Sly Stone brought a new sound, then motown did the same with the temptations and others!!..give me the JB'S

I am more familiar with songs featuring the JB's. "Doing It To Death" is one of my favorite "funky" songs of all time!

So I guess my choice would be the JB's.

OOPS! I had forgotten that the Funk Brothers were associated with all those great Motown songs. However,(to my knowledge) no records were released with the name "Funk Brothers" credited as the artists on the label. The JB's got credit for several records as a back-up band.with James Brown and Fred Wesley.

So can the "Funk Brothers" be considered an actual group to be compared with other groups?

The Funk Brothers set standards at Mowtown and I especially would like to acknowledge the late great Bass player James Jamerson. However, I have to really give it up for my favorites, the J.B.'s...

The J.B.'s under the leadership of the late great James Brown and Fred Wesley set the standard for the FUNK grooves that are still used to this very day. Names like Maceo Parker, Bobby Byrd, Clyde Stubblefield, Bootsy Collins, etc. are true master musicians and hands down one of the best backing bands of all-time.

gotta go with the funk brothers here...after all..they played on practically EVERY motown song in the 60s (not to mention moonlighting on jackie wilson's 'higher and higher')...
