I took 23 one semester - big mistake! Way too intense.
15-18 is about normal but it depends on what classes you're taking whether that's a hard load.
To finish in 4 years (8 semesters) you must take at least 15 per semester.

Most colleges will let you take up to 18 units but sometimes approval by a counselor is needed.

My experience has been that 120 credits are needed to graduate, thus making 15 the norm to finish in 8 semesters.

Yes, I'm taking 18 this fall. I know people that are taking as many as 24.
