Yes, you should take folic acid or a prenatal which contains it. Folic acid is most important during the first three months of pregnancy and can help to avoid certain defects. Get a good prenatal multi-vitamin from the pharmacy - ask the pharmacist which one's good if you don't know where to start.
Don't take just any regular vitamin as they may contain high levels of vitamin A, which should be avoided during pregnancy as too much may cause defects. Most prenatals have some vit. A in it, but not as much as in other vits and some even claim that the vit. A in their vitamins only releases when the body really needs it.
A healthy diet helps considerably too, and from about 3 months onwards, get extra calcium on top of the multi-vit... your doctor can suggest a good calcium supplement. You'll need loads of protein too (meat, eggs, fish, beans, etc) but avoid liver as it contains a lot of Vit. A...

You need a prenatal vitamin. You can get a prescription from your caregiver (midwife or doctor) or you can get over the counter pills from a pharmacy. Don't skimp! Off brands sometimes don't dissolve well, and you only end up getting 1/2 of the vitamin absorbed into your system. I would recommend either Stuart Prenatal or the GMC brand.
And if you can't buy prenatals right away, yes, you need to take folic acid - if you've never had a miscarriage, you need 800 mcgs a day.
Good luck!

A good womens vitamin or prenatal formula with folic acid is important. You can get prenatal vitamins for about $10 at Walmart or Target.
Also, eating a diet rich in iron and calcium is essential for you and the baby.

Go to any pharmacy and buy the over the counter prenatal vitamins. They are not just "a pill you can take" but they are critical you take one each day. They might make you a little more sick to the stomach if you are already having nausea issues, but take them none the less. Also, you can take Folic acid. Drinks LOTS of water too! HTH!

You can buy prenatal vitamins at almost any department store. You should start taking them as soon as you can. You are at a very important time in your pregnancy, and there are nutrients you may not be getting from your diet that the baby needs right now. Your doctor may be able to recommend a certain brand of vitamin that he or she feels is better, or maybe even prescribe some. That's what mine did.
Congrats and Good Luck!! :)

You need to take a prenatal vitamin. Any of the ones at the pharmacy should be fine, but make sure it has folic acid and calcium. The one I take only has 15% of my daily calcium, so I take additional calcium supliments. Omega 3 is also recommended for brain developement. Make sure you find one that is for pregnant women though. My Dr. gave me a sample of Expectra Omega 3, but I was unable later to find any in the pharmacy, so I odered another one online that is made for pregnant women.
good luck, congrats, and make sure you make an appoinment with a Dr.

Prenatal Vitamins with folic acid. Schedule an ob/gyn appointment as soon as possible, for the best health care for you and your unborn baby.

Your doctor will more than likely prescribe Pre-natal vitamins to you, and maybe an iron supplement. Be careful with the latter, sometimes they cause constipation. In that case, then just increase the number of foods you eat with natural iron in it like dark leafy greens, raisins, that sort of thing.
Some people use food supplements from the health food store, but there are no guarantees on those. It's best to not rely on an excessive number of pills and supplements, but instead just eat well-balanced and variety filled meals each day...and of course, drink your 8 glasses of water per day especially in summer so you don't get dehydrated.

Prenatal vitamins- they have the right amount of vitamins for both you and the baby. Also, make sure your diet is balanced and healthy; you need extra calories for the baby, but stay away from too many fatty and unnutritious foods.

I have heard that folic acid can prevent birth defects. You should visit a planned parenthood for the right vitamins.
