Basically I want to make a vcd, but in avi format so I can watch it on my computer. I have some programs and stuff, but I really just need a tutorial on how to do it. Thanks.

Actually DVDShrink is NOT the right software.
The software you want is AutoGK (i.e. Auto Gordian Knot).
Available at http://www.videohelp.com
Look under Tools
It's SPECIFICALLY for creating 700 MB AVI files. (or 1400 MB if you want to go to 2 disks.)

You can use a DVD Ripper to help you convert DVD. Many software on Internet, you can search on Google or Yahoo.
I Recommend you to try Daniusoft DVD Ripper which a friend told me. It could convert DVD to other popular video formats as: MP4, WMV, AVI with only three steps. It is very easy to use, you can review all the progress.

very very simple if you use the right software. dvd shrink. i have heard it is hard to track down even on google but try this link provided it is very simple it will shrink it to a single dvd. or make the files to a computer folder for you to play. but small enough to fit a CD.... maybe not. there is a slide bar you can compress it maybe you can go that small....
