I am 9 1/2 weeks pregnant, and today I cut the grass (i cut it a few times before i knew i was pregnant) and I was wondering if it should be avoided? I was using a drive on and I didn't fill it with gas so I didn't expose my baby to that, but you know how lawnmowers can be, they can give off some fumes (its a new lawnmower so it can't be that bad) It was a windy day so I got lots of fresh air but still got a little of the fumes. I didn't want to cut the grass, I was trying to avoid it at all costs but my husband is working and the lawn was like a field and I couldn't look at it anymore, it had to be cut... did i hurt my baby with the fumes from the lawnmower?

I don't think mowing the grass will hurt you or your baby, especially with the way mowers are made now, they are lightweight and don't require a lot of exertion or serious pushing.

The fumes are not harmful since you are outdoors with plenty of ventilation. The only thing to worry about would be if you were on a riding mower that bounced you around a lot (depending on the terrain of your lawn).

I mow my lawn sometimes and I'm pregnant. I just stop for breaks and drink lots of water or Gatorade.

I don't think you did any harm. I would guess that when you're outside fumes get disbursed pretty quickly.

I think any bad indoor fumes are the ones you have to worry about.

Certainly mowing the grass wouldn't be nearly as bad as walking down a busy street.

What is a "drive on" by the way?

I really wouldn't be too concerned... With both of my children i cut grass once a week during pregnancy (while i was 6-9 months with my first and 2-5 months with my second)... as long as you are directly inhaling any fumes you should be okay. If you start to feel light headed or dizzy from them, then you know you are getting too much exposure. otherwise, your pretty much safe!

No.. the fumes won't hurt your baby with you being outside. What can hurt your baby is the jostling around if it is a riding lawn mower. I actually hurt myself while riding mine while I was carrying my twins because they were obviously feeling uncomforable and kicking in my ribs and so forth. I wouldn't stop if it was a push mower until closer to the end, but I wouldn't ride a lawnmower anymore, they can really jostle you around.

No it wont hurt the baby. I think people use the dont mow the lawn as an excuse to be lazy. Its perfectly safe to mow the lawn just take a lot of brakes and stay hydrated. I mow my lawn still and I'm 18.5 weeks.
