look at your coils. Check to see if you have spark at the plugs when you crank the engine. You need spark, compression and fuel to start an engine. If you have spark and fuel, then you need to do a compression test on the engine next.
good luck..........
and yes, the timing will affect the hard or no start if maybe it jumped timing that much..........check the plugs for fouling and wearing too.

Yes, look at the fuel injectors or the fuel injector fuse. My 1993 Chevy fullsize pickup had basically the same problem, and it was one of the injectors. I'm not saying this is the cause, but it's a pretty good place to start. The other respondents who said air+water+fuel were dead on. If you are missing any one of those things, your engine won't start.

The above answers are all very good: you need a fuel-air vapour, spark, and also compression. The likeliest culprit is the lack of spark...take out the plugs and with each one plugged into its lead and grounded on the engine, crank the engine and check for a big fat blue spark. You need all six to do this.Good luck

Take of the air cleaner
Down th the throttle body
You will see 2 small barrel looking things above the inlet.
Those are the fuel injectors
There should be a steady stream of gas from them as soon as you turn the key and while your cranking
If not take them out, and clean or replace them

Air
Fuel
Spark
Those 3 things are all thats needed to Start a car.. Timing is very relative.. but not entirely neccesary to be perfect..
So i would check your air filter, then check that you have proper spark !

if i am not mistaking.. it is still a tbi unit? i would take the air inlet off and dribble a little fuel in it.... if it starts and runs for a second you can narrow it down to a fuel problem
