If I can't buy it in cash then I don't need it.

Money is a means of exchange. Pure and simple.
People overspend in the USA, because they equate credit cards with their personal cash. People do it for many reasons. Most reasons are to satisfy something they see as a need, but in reality, is a want.

All humans need is air, water, food, clothes and shelter. everything Else is gravy, pure and simple.

Society has taught is to search for and most highly honor the golden fleece, the Holy Grail. This grail is nothing but a way to destroy the human race, because having stuff is not which makes us happy. Service to the planet and having a wonderful time in life is what brings happiness.

So credit card debt in the USA is at record levels and basically, if we all stopped paying for one month, the USA would go bankrupt, according to experts.

Putting good spending habits into practice is another thing.

There is a difference between wants and needs. Spending money will not bring happiness. Save a little for a rainy day. It is not how much you earn that counts, but how much you save. Many people spend a lot to impress the neighbors. They won't be impressed if you get layed off from your job and end up in bankruptcy.

I don't like to spend money at all unless I know I have enough to cover my spending. I'm a frugal, except on vacations, because those are times to spend because I want to. But in most cases, I'll only spend when I absolutely need something and there's no way to avoid not spending money.

My personal philosophy comes directly from the words of the Unsinkable Molly Brown - survivor of the Titanic.

"Money is like manure - it doesn't do any good unless you spread it around and make things grow."

And I will never turn down a gorgeous pair of shoes either - even if I don't need them. So I guess I'm a splurger too.

Spending money is like voting for the society you want to live in. If you buy well made durable products you are voting for this type of economy. If you buy pet rocks and shoes you wear once you vote for this type of economy. My recent visit to the mall suggests an economy that will not support very much going forward.

See the connection? Buying solar cells helps that industry, just like buying soda helps the beverage industry. So make it a moral decision to spend money.

I so agree on the splurging thing but think about it this way (trust me it works since my fiencee has helped get me in this mindset LOL)
he tells me
"Raelin, sweetheart, would you rather spend your money on little things or maybe buy that sewing machine you wanted? Or that Nintendo DS?"
Do you get what I'm saying? Basically think of something you have been dying to buy like maybe a car or something and think if you save all of your money then you can get that sooner ya know
Also another thing that works is anytime you get a check from work split it 3 ways Bills, Savings and Spending. THAT ALSO HAS BEEN MY GODSEND THEORY LOL
Trust me it works.
Sincerely,
Raelin

I love to shop, but I am very frugal about it. I only buy clothes on sale and I really do not care to spend my hard earned money for a label.

lol- after some of the other Q's I've been contemplating, the first picture with this one that pops into my mind is from the book by Philip K. Dick "A Scanner Darkly"... where they pass the same McDonalds hamburger ad infinitum back and forth. (ilmao- small things amuse me, huh? ;) )

money comes and goes... it serves its purpose for me, and thats about it.

(no, I'm not intending to be a pain with my answer)

once all the bills, rent, etc. have been paid i spend everything i dont need for food on things i like. i ask myself ,'will i still like it years from now?' if the answer is 'yes', and i have enough $$$, i get it. even if it means buying a lot less food.
