first of all, the car's wiring harness isn't going to melt down. Your problem is that you have a bad ground connection for something in the dash. You didn't supply any information on the car, but I'm going to guess that the radio is not original and that the problem is that your radio isn't grounded.

When the radio has a bad ground or no separate ground and you turn it on the electricity that flows to the radio seeks the "path of least resistance" to ground. In your case, I'll bet that the path it is following is through the headlamp switch because your radio is wired into the headlight circuit so that the radio lights come on when you turn the headlights on.

when you turn the high beams on you break the ground circuit through the headlamp switch and the radio cuts out as the high beams come on.

You'll need to check the ground for your radio and see if it is loose or corroded. If you don't have a separate ground, install one between the radio chassis and a body ground. My guess is that will fix your light problem.

hope that helps

you have some serious problems with your electrical connections in your dash/steering colum
you need to immediatly get to a shop.. because you could destroy your ENTIRE car if your wires get crossed and melt down.. and short out your computer and cause a fire to happen!
