i just installed 1/2" greenboard around my tub. i screwed it 1/4" above the tub lip which is about 1". so there is a total gap of 1 1/4" from the top of the tub. i'm installing 2"x2" mosaic tiles. what do i do with the gap around it which is 1 1/4" high plus the thickness of the greenboard and mastic? do i need to put something behind the tile to fill in the gap? thanks!

All 3 answers are extremely valid. With all due respect I can't imagine anyone still using greenboard in a shower/bath area.

If I was contracted, I'd probably rip it all out and start again.

The raised "Lip" on a tub is designed to be overlapped; and not strictly righ to the Tub top; but certainly not above it.

I would rip it all down and use cement board or Hardibacker. You need to overlap the lip a bit, just don't have it resting on the tub. The tile needs to come down a little lower than the backerboard to prevent wicking. some caulk will prevent the bottom tile from moving too much. Never use mastic. mix your own.

you should have dropped the greenboard and left it a 1/4" above the tub. i always shim out my studs if the tub has a big lip where it meets the studs. that way your greenboard wont kick out at the bottom

Well first of all you are supposed to use Durock(cement board)as a backer board and then tile it. You could try flexible foam filler rods and then caulk it.
