Maintaining a population on mars requires several things
1: a steady supply of fresh water
2: a steady supply of food with enough caloric content and vitamins and minerals to keep humans alive
3: a sufficient supply of oxygen at a suitable pressure
4: Sufficient medical care to keep the population alive -- as well as sufficient males and females to.. you get the idea I pray.
5: sufficient entertainment to keep the population from going insane
6: a suitable amount of heat for human beings to exist
there are many methods proposed to doing this. The most logical one in my opinion requiring an indigenous water supply. Terraforming a portion of the surface (this requires decaying matter in order to make decent soil for crop growing) and covering that portion in a multi-layered glass shield called a biodome. The reason its multi layered is to minimize the damage if the glass is cracked somehow. Since mars is colder than earth, it would require a tremendous amount of energy to keep it heated, the most logical way is either wind or solar energy. most likely wind since mars, being a large desert, has plenty of wind. Since shipping cost to mars isn't exactly 19$ for over night shipping, and since we need to send tons upon tons of supplies to mars to accomplish all this, I don't see it happening any time in the near future, though I guess it is possible

Well first off you would need a stable environment and a thicker atmosphere which we could create by doing the same ting their as we are doing here...create pollution. By thickening the environment the suns rays could become trapped inside the planet and release the ground water then we would need to plant lots of trees. The high amounts of CO2 would be a plant heaven! After creating oxygen it would become possible for humans to live there without air tanks! Then we create "Passenger Shuttles" to take people there and back for a reasonable price. But if we aren't careful we will thicken our own atmosphere in the process and promote Global Warming and that we would not want! But after being able to do all of that then all we have to do is get the economy on Mars to surplus. Then we have a Purpose and a Way to achieve what has been put in front of us forever...To infinity and beyond

Extreme recycling.
It wouldn´t be possible to maintain a large population on Mars. One key ingredient that is missing is nitrogen, making #2 on Wafflecopters list almost impossible. Only traces remain in the very thin atmosphere. There might be enough carbon, and hydrogen (the soil is mostly oxides so plenty of oxygen is there) to support humans but whit out nitrogen life will be difficult. No nitrogen can be allowed to escape. There is water ice on Mars and CO2 in the atmosphere. The mined water would be a very precious commodity. It can be split into hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen you breath. The hydrogen you react with CO2 to get methane and more water. The methane and liquid oxygen can be used as rocket fuel if you want to leave. You can also split it into carbon and hydrogen. The carbon you can use to "steal" oxygen from the oxides in the soil with metal, useful as construction material, as a byproduct. The hydrogen you can use to reduce out more carbon from the martian air. But the nitrogen escaped long ago with the bulk of Mars atmosphere.

I don't think we could support a population there. At least not with our present level of technology. The air is way to thin on Mars; about as thin as the atmosphere of Earth at an altitude of 100,000 feet. You need a space suit to survive in such thin air. Anyway, the air on Mars is poisonous, almost pure carbon dioxide. And the soil is believed to be toxic, although we don't know that for sure yet. On the up side, there is water on Mars. Water can be split into oxygen and hydrogen, and also just used as water for drinking and washing and growing plants. That is extremely important and it is what makes Mars better than the Moon, even though it is much farther away.

You wouldn't go to Mars if you wanted to maintain the population. I mean, it would be like earth if you went there. Global Warming and stuff. Just don't go there.
