I have a two battery 24 volt trolling system. Is it safe to hook jumpercables to one or the other of the two batteries even though they are connected for the purpose of jump starting a dead starting battery?

i would disconnect them from the boat/charger/whatever before hooking up one or the other

if they are charged from the boat, there is a danger that the 24volt system may share the ground with the 12 volt system. if you put the jumpers on the wrong battery - depending which jumper you connect first
you will either short out one of the trolling batteries and melt the jump lead
or pump 24volts into the 12volt system -cooking everything connected huge currents and an explosion are quite possible best bet is disconnection - trust me
good luck

You will have to disconect the batterys as 24v will not work on 12v battery??There is no ground between the 2=12v only neg to pos.If you disconnect the second 12 v from the first 12v the one battery with the ground than you can uses that battery as a jump.

When you connect the the jumper cables, then connect the "+" (red) on the jumper cable to "+" on battery and "-" (blue / black) on jumper cable to "-" on the battery. It does not matter if you connect the "+"or"-" first with jumper cables. This is done only if we are to mount / unmount a car battery on the car. The reason for this is: "+" is the wires that are in the car, while "- " is connected to the metal on the car. If you then use a wrench and turn on the "+" pole first, then perhaps the other end of the wrench hit the metal ( - ) on the car, then the "+" and "-" meet each other, and so there will be fireworks.

I would not recommend it. Especially since some trolling motors have inline-fuses going to the positive. You may blow a fuse or worse, fry the motor instantly.
