Before I went on holiday I left my dog with a neighbout who said they would look after the dog when I came back I could not contact the neighbour by phone they did not answer their phone and when I knocked on the door the owner of the property said that the neighbour had moved 1 week ago I was unable to contact the neighbour I gave dog to and he has disappeared!
I went to the police and they said that there was nothing I could do as I gave them the dog!
What if it was a child you gave to someone to look after and they never returned it would it be the same or if a car rental place rented a car to you and you never gave it back would this not be a crime also?

Can someone tell me if this is a crime surely it is as yes I gave the person the dog but to look after and not keep so are the police saying the dog is worth less than other things?
I am in the united kingdom please enlighten me with laws regaring something like this, the police did not even take my name or anything???

The point I am trying to make is that the police said that if the dog was grabbed from us and someone took it then it would be a crime but because we gave it to them it is not a crime.surely this is a crime if you let someone look after something and they do not give you it back after agreed time surely this is a crime?ok there is a word for car theft in us ok kidnapping is word for taking child but what about anything else if you give someone your suit, motorbike, diamond ring, television anything to look after while you are on holiday and they disappear with it surely it is a crime i would call it dognapping!!!!

the only thing you can do is track them down and try to get your dog back it is your word against theirs they could say you gave them the dog and you could not prove otherwise you can only prove the dog used to belong to you

Well, I'm not in the UK but here are a couple of concepts:
Dog - Property without a title or other proof of ownership
Child - A person. Taking the child would obviously be kidnapping. Proving the connection between child and parent is not too difficult.
Car - Titled property. Proving the ownership of the car is pretty simple.

With the dog it is your word against theirs. You can't really prove the dog is yours.

You are missing my point I think. Despite pictures chips etc, they can claim that you gave them the dog to keep. It is still your word against theirs.

If your discussion with your neighbours about the terms of caring for your dog was as accurate as your grammar, and if you extended your holiday a bit without notifying them, taking advantage of their hospitality, then you haven't a chance. Nothing in writing, right? No witnesses, right?

I would say your dog may be the lucky one!

If it were a child we were talking about it would be considered kidnapping. If it were a rental car it would be considered auto theft.
