A friend bought a puppy that was "half off" because he was 4 months old, had been there for 2 months and hadnt sold. I just wondered how long they keep an animal and what they do if it doesnt sell.

Many pups that don't sell are euthanised, unless the puppy mill the pet store got them from will take them back as a breeder and perpetuate the endless cycle of suffering. Pet shops, like the hideous puppy mills, are only interested in money. Don't support this cruelty! Please, NEVER buy a puppy from a pet store. Go to a shelter and save a life. Thanks for your concern.

Probably turn it over to the local ASPCA or animal shelter. If the animal is healthy, they will do their best to find it a home. Otherwise, it is usually euthanized-unless the shelter is close to a veterinary school, where many students and teachers will volunteer to help for the experience, and because they love animals-why else would they choose that career?

Personally, I don't like the idea of pet shops. If the animal isn't a purebreed, there are probably already too many of them. Better to get one from a privately-run animal shelter. There, you get one that is already neutered, has had it's first shots, and, in general, has a clean bill of health. (f it does have a medical condition, that can be treated or cured, they must tell you about it-not so with pet shops!).

If you are looking for a certain breed, it's better to go to a breeder. Not only is it usually cheaper, but each breeder, having a reputation to uphold, will definitely tell you if the animal you want has a health issue. Breeders advertise in local newspapers, and in magazines dedicated to the breed they specialize in.

normally, if an animal doesn't sell the put them to sleep. most people only want puppies and kittens so when the animal gets too "old" the store owners feel that no one wants the animal. i'm not sure if they do it themself or if they give the animal to a SPCA but either way the animal dies! how sad...

Awww no that's so mean!
I'd hate to think what they do with them!
I don't think they kill the because they're meant to like animals [aren't they?].
I think they must sell them somehow.
They can't just kill an animal because it didn't sell.

I've never actually thought about that before, because I just assumed they kept them until they got sold.
:/

Most are jusk kept there until they are sold. Some are kept as "store mascots" which are animals the store keeps for the rest of thier lives or are taken home by store employees.

What do you think????? If they don't sell, they cost more and more in upkeep and vaccines and possible vet care. So, if after the "sale" they still don't sell...................................
