90% of what is done in Washington is "playing politics." The welfare of the nation is pretty far down their list of priorities.

I think that even the democratic politicians understand that there won't be time for creating social program for social spending if we don't at least keep our borders safe from people who want to blow the place up. So, in the interest of keeping power, they did what it takes :)
