i know that some people on here and around the world get on here and say good things about people with disabilities. Then when you see them on the little tiny short school but you point and laugh at them. so i think that if there anybody on here talking good things about those type a people then laugh at them later r just fakes. Do you know anybody who does that. Will you probably don't, but you would be really suprised at how many kids and teens do it. Also if you have older kids they maybe do it to, and you people don't do nothing about it. Because i used to ride on the short bus and you don't know how it feels to be laughed at you just don't know.

Pople are cruel to others basically because they don't' have any self respect. They are so busy trying to place themselves 'above' others for totally false and phony reasons that they can't even see that they are really holding up a mirror to the world that shows how shallow and insecure they are. Can you imagine feeling better about yourself by making fun of someone else instead of feeling better about yourself because of your own accomplishments?! It really is sad for them - how empty and confused they must be. Stay strong and do your best. Don't let anyone else or their lame attitudes define who you are or how you should feel about yourself. Make your best life and be proud of who you are based on your accomplishments - including learning to turn away from those who are cruel and unkind. Don't waste your precious time trying to figure them out. Just stay away from them and try not to let their ignorance have any lasting effect on you. Much luck in all you do.

I know it seems like no one else in the world could know how it feels to be laughed at and treated with scorn. But more people know than you think. Although I never had to ride on the short school bus (my mother took me to school most of the time) I was laughed at and often pelted with garbage. Most adults did nothing and those that did would only say, "Now, now, children...behave..." Which, of course, didn't do anything.

I agree with you that people who laugh at those who are different (ie, ride the short school bus, walk differently, talk "funny", act "strange", etc.) just don't know. They should have to live as the people they make fun of for a week, just to see how it is.

The only reason I can think of as to why they do these cruel things is because they don't understand, or don't want to understand. They're going under that old mentality of "if you can't keep up with the rest of us, then you should be left behind to fend for yourself." I think that some people don't realize that's not the case anymore; we're no longer living in the stone age. For all intensive purposes, we are a civilized society. A civilized society takes care of all of its members, even and especially those that are at a disadvantage. Quite simply put, those who pick on the disabled are little better than cavemen.

You would also be shocked at how many grown adults also make fun of the disabled. By adults laughing at making fun of the disabled, it is telling the kids that it is OK to make fun of the disabled. This occurs because of a superiority complex and the lack of understanding these people have toward the disabled. Little do they know that these clowns are deluding themselves because if these people are not careful they can end up disabled themselves.

Can someone explain the "short bus" - was a minibus for children with disabilities? I have a son with a disability - he doesn't hide it but he doesn't make a fuss either - he was picked on at school to start with but kept at it (he is quite brainy) and eventually the bullies realised that it was more fun to be friends with him as he has a great sense of humour and fun. Now adult people are astonished to learn of the disability as he copes well with it and they don't realise. Why should they.

Most of us have secret mental and spiritual disabilities (phobias, prejudices) anyway so better to have only physical ones perhaps

You're talking about teenagers and and kids, who will make fun of anything that isn't part of their small universe. In the real world, which is not composed of entirely of children, these things do not happen that much.

The truth of the matter is the world is populated by a lot of mean-spirited people. There's not much we can do about that except ignore them and take care of our own lives rather than worry about whatever immature comments they may be slinging our way. When it's all said and done it's just words, and words can only hurt us if we let them.

Anybody who laughs at or makes fun of somebody with disabilities, is disabled themselves, in their head. I can understand being uncomfortable around them, but to make fun of them is gross. We should just thank God that we are whole and know that in the twinkling of an eye, we too could become disabled, even worse than they. But for the grace of God, go I.

just yesterday i bumped into a girl i went to high school with. she was weird. she went to school on the short bus. i didn't make-fun of her, but i didn't stop other people from cracking jokes at her.

now, as a teacher, when i see students treat others that way it breaks my heart and i do the best that i can to make sure that they treat all people in my classroom with respect.

i think peer pressure and bad life-cycles are hard to break...but we all have to try to overcome our ignorance and bias towards all people.
