I'm in Canada as well, currently living on Vancouver Island.

I have my hummingbird feeders up year round. They see the most use during the spring and summer, but I do see them during all parts of the year so I like to make sure they've got food.

Really I'd just recommend watching to see when they stop coming, then taking your feeders down if you never see any. If you still see one or two it can't hurt anything to leave it out.

I have what is called a Spider that is right outside my window. I have 2 Humming bird feeders hanging on it plus one wild bird feeder and 4 hanging baskets with real flowers in them. I watch all the birds coming to eat there all the time while I am setting here at my computer. So far (knock on wood) have never had a problem with any of the birds that come here to eat.

Hi,

It is actually a good idea to leave your feeders up into the fall. It was once thought that leaving your hummingbird feeders up would delay the hummingbird's migration. Studies have shown that reduced sunlight is what triggers the hummingbirds to start their migration and not reduced food sources. If you remove your feeders early, the hummers will simply feed elsewhere, reducing the chance that they will return to your feeders in the spring.

Happy Birding,

John

No you can leave them up all year. I live in Seattle and I think it's the Rufus hummer that stays around all year. Or it might be Anna's. Anyway, one of them stays. I have pictures of them at my feeder with the temp in the 20's. Gotta keep the feeders defrosted is all. I mix 1/4 c sugar to 1 c boiled water.

Hummingbirds are smart enough to know when it is time to leave your area. Take the feeders down when you see no more birds feeding there.

The hummingbirds will let you know. watch them and when you don't see as many coming to it as normal leave it up maybe a week after so that the ones who are flying past you to go south can still eat.
