You need to do a title search. You can't do that on line. Call an attorney or title insurance company.

You can't just go to a website and get the history of old houses. There are people who research house histories, but that can cost a lot. If there is a historical society in your area, you could start there.

Congratulations on your new home! Researching the history of your home is a fun pasttime and can take some digging. The place to start is via a title search - you should be having one done anyway to change the title from your in-laws to your name; just call that person and ask them to give you whatever info they have. From there, you can go to your local library to look up the folks who owned the house before you!

There are no websites which will provide the information which you seek.
You may be able to find the history of ownership by checking the land records office. Perhaps neighbors will be able to tell you some history, if they've lived there long enough.
But that's about your only option, unless the property involved is a historic facility with a published history.

Have you tried asking them about it? Gee ain't you lucky being given a house. My mother in law wouldn't give me the time of day. You could try asking neighbours and your local council about the history of a place though- they are the most likely to yeild results.

Here in Florida you can get the property history at the county's property appraisers web site. If you use a title company for the transfer from your parents to you, they will do a title search and it will tell you the property history as well.

start by asking your in-laws. they will probably know a lot about the house and that should give you enough information to start a deeper research...
