Well, Pluto's about 5 light *hours* from Earth. A light year would take you about 25 times further from Earth than pluto is.

Pluto is only about 6 light hours away. That means one light year is 1,460 times farther than the distance to Pluto. All planets in our solar system are much, much closer than one light year. The nearest other star, other than our own Sun, is several light years away. If it has planets, they are probably all just a small fraction of a light year from that star. All that space in between the two solar systems is just empty. Interstellar space is unimaginably vast and empty.

"It is most commonly used for the distances to stars and other galaxies. The nearest star is 4.2 light years away from our sun. We are 8.3 light minutes away form the Sun. the distance to the outer most planet Pluto is about 13 light hours".

But I have also seen another explanation for this, not sure which is correct.

"At its most distant, when the two bodies are on the opposite sides of the sun from one another, Pluto lies 4.67 billion miles (7.5 billion kilometers) from Earth. At their closest, the two are only 2.66 billion miles (4.28 billion km) apart.Feb 20, 2016".

It was good, and shows how far off the mark the questioner is.

Please people, don't underestimate the light-year.

Bear in mind that the NEAREST stars are 10s of thousands times as far away as the FARTHEST planets in the Solar System.

Get that scale in your mind.
