My husband decided that the job he was working was not a stable company. He went in today to turn in his two week notice. His boss, who just "loved his work" told him to bring his things in tommorrow. A nice person turned very ugly. Why would she not want him to work out a notice?

Well if the job is 'at will', and there is no need for sucession planning then the employee OR the employee can terminate it.
But.. if the company is firing him effective tomorrow, and without notice or reason, in theory your husband can file for unemployment.
Or.. if you had counted on that 2 weeks, he can go back in... announce he has changed his mind, and work the two weeks. If he has not submitted his resignation in writing, then they would be hard pressed to say no and risk a wrongful termination lawsuit.
sort of depends upon where you want to be in 2 weeks time.

There are several different reasons that companies I have worked for do not let employees work their last few days after giving notice. Some reasons include 1) decreased employee morale among people left at the company, 2) fears of losing additional proprietary information to competitors, 3) lack of focus for final days of employment and 4) company policies.

The company is not required to let you stay for the 2 weeks after giving notice. Where i work, you give notice, you are laid off then and there. However we are still required to pay you for the 2 weeks.

It generally is standard practice in some businesses to just send them home and pay them during their notice. It keeps the chatter down, and other negative behavior under control. Your husband got a paid vacation. Cool!

Some companies have this policy. I think there is something to be said for it because the two week period can be very stressful for the company and its workers.
