i'm just going to reinforce the others with a twist..... this about it as a giant set of teeth - what happenes when you don't brush them after eating -- ick! same thing ; )

grab that box of arm & hammer from your fridge....
dump about 1/4 the box down....
follow with a cup of white vineger
(you'll see the fizzing and bubbling - it's okay it's cleaning the "teeth" and pipes)
flush with hot water.
**this does not hurt the pipes - even the old ones.. i do it on all my frains every 4-5 months or when the mood hits me - especially the tub. helps get ff the goo from the sides f the pipes.

after using always run the water - cold for a good 30 seconds

when you have lemons -- or pick some up once a month or so - grind one down - hhmmmm smells great!

whenever i go out of town i run the water and then dump down some vineger and just leave it - it's a natural disenfectant.

garbage disposals smell bad because they have food particals and grease in them you can put some baking soda in it then let it sit for a while then you can use it as normal but try not to put grease or greasey foods in it that causes it to smell or you can go to the store and buy cleaners for your disposal but soda is cheaper and works better

Have you been putting grease or greasy foods down it? Grease will coat the blades and go rancid if not used for awhile. Put some HOT bleach water down it while it is running, just before you go to bed.....shut it off and let it sit overnight. Don`t run any water through it until the morning.

Dispose of food immediately after putting it in and freshen it routinely with baking soda or lemons. Do not let food sit in it for any period of time.

could be bacteria, try pouring some white vinegar down there and let it sit for about 15 min then turn it on. this should kill any bacteria that is causing the odor.
