Hi, my dad is in his sixties and he's been retired for about a year now. He lives with my grandma who's in her 80's. He's had hip surgery on both hips and stays home all day watching tv. Well recently he's mentioned that he's getting cabin fever, we all three go out to dinner and a movie once a week, but he wants to do other things too. However when I mention casinos he says he doesn't like the crowds. Any ideas what we can do on my days off?

What about going to a park just to watch people go by- the lake-bingo is my mom's fav! and better than a casino- the local Zoo they have powered scooters so his hip will not ache- some parks have boat rides and sometimes a Senior group is great and the guys get together and play chess and talk about them good ole days! Call you city hall and ask what is avail in that area or for a local contact number of some of the groups around- here they have the purple ladies(a group of ladies that get together for bridge and etc..they have a guys group too but ??the name!) Hope that helps!

Hey, get your Dad a computer and introduce him to Yahoo q&a!

My Mum is in her 70's and loves the net, she goes into yahoo chat and has friends all over the world, my Mum is widowed and lives alone so finds life lonely and this has really opened things up for her!

Does he like fishing? Thats a nice quiet thing, but you also get fresh air without having to do a lot!

Perhaps bingo even, lots of people of lots of ages play that and it can be quite a sociable thing!

How about an evening or weekend college course, there must be something that he is interested in! 60 is nothing and the brain cells need to be stimulated, and if you find something he likes he can meet other people with the same interests!

Hope thats given you food for thought!

GVH, ask him. There is probably something he wants to do but he'd prefer to at least start doing it with you or one of your other relatives. Everybody is different as to what they want to do for fun when they retire. Some want to continue what they have been doing for recreation and entertainment. Some want to do something they left earlier in life. And some want to try something completely new.

Watch TV with him and ask him what he would liket to do. It might be a one-time thing. That's okay. He may just need something to do to get him to the point where he leaves the house again.

Good luck. You are a good son for thinking about your dear old dad!

How about miniature golf or just taking a scenic ride and stopping to explore historic areas. That is if he is able to get around well after the hip surgery.

I do that with my mom and if we need a wheel chair, we rent one. We also stop and get fresh produce on the roadside. Are there any lakes nearby lakes or streams where you can fish if he likes fishing? Does he like to take pictures with the digital camera? Hope you can find something that he is interested in.

plan a fishing trip/picnic
go for a ride and stop for ice cream
go to the library
check in your area for a senior center....they have lots of stuff going on there, and usually meals are served
camping trip
WalMart..good exercise to walk around there
window shop at the mall
visit the local animal shelter and pet the dogs
help him find a "lady friend"

Heck, why do YOU have to be involved...get him out to the very many Senior's centers in your hometown. These are not only for extremely old people, but young seniors too.

I found this website for you...
http://www.vegas4locals.com/lasvegasseniorcenters.html

He's more than young enough to find himself some not-so-young hottie and enjoy "other" activities as well.

Museums, garage sales, farmers markets, library, if he has any interest in a hobby, find out where that gang meets...and when, church, community services ... he's in his 60's gads he still has plenty of time to help others! Local concerts in the park, senior centers....there's so much to do and so little time to do it!

Join the local gym or YMCA. They DO have sitdown exercise classes, you two could go and participate together.
