I did always count on $100 a day, plus flight, but the dollar is going down, prices are going up and you travel in a few years when all is going to be different again.

I would advise you to buy a good travel guide, work out what your travel would have cost you in the year the guide is from and add 25% per year since the guide was published for an amount to safe.
Lonely Planet guides are good for this, they have different kinds of lodgings, transport, museum, restaurant and so on. And the prices they show were right the year before they published.
Buy a copy second hand, if you can, a guide for all of Europe will be the best.

Added:
I said the dollar goes down and the prices go up!
So if you can safe enough for $300 per day plus flight do so. But if you can not, now you can still travel for $100 + flight. But you may not be able to do that in a few years. But if the currency situation changes again the dollar might be worth more again by the time you go.

The main costs will be 1. accommodation ( if you look at websites you can get an option of what that will cost...or at least an idea)...as you know where you are going that helps....but some cities in some places are more expensive than others eg Venice, Florence....but again doing the research will help you there).
2. transportation - you may be better to get a eurorail pass if you are going for a specific time and going to many places. If this is pre bought that really will help out on the cost and you will really only need to buy internal ( ie city) transport which is usually pretty good value.
Trains are a very efficient way to travel around and do the business really...apart from going to London you would not need to use planes or ferrys.....getting to London is varied ( I am not sure if europass includes the UK but if it doesn;t there are buses ( cheap option usually and may include the ferry or go via the chunnel), planes ( can be cheap) or ferry.

3. food.....you can spend up to 20 euros for a decent ( evening) meal in europe...some places will be cheaper, others more expensive......lunch will be more and if you go to places that serve breakfast you can save some money there.

I personally did not buy many souveniers....I guess I thought they were a. too expensive or b/ too tacky....so apart from the odd thing I really only got postcards, brouchures/ booklets and took LOTS of photos........so I would limit this as it wastes space in bags or costs lots of money to spend so only buy things you REALLY want.......
THere is also the cost of entry into places like museums or places like the Eiffel tower etc so this has to be additional...you could do a bit a research on this......

Once you look at it all and add it up...have a contingency plan of money AND have some emergency money available as well as you will feel so much more secure.

I advice to go a travel agency and look for travel circuits...it's always better to follow their plans because they know about traveling.Besides you might come with other people and not be alone, and even if you sleep in not very fancy Hotels, it's always expensive, specially if you go to the main cities here in Europe, everything is very expensive, and the food is not very good (you pay and you don't' eat well). From my own traveling experience i'd advice you once more to look for a good travel agent that might help you to work a plan of your trip. It's always the best choice!
