Every plumbing fixture in the house has a hot water pipe from the hot water heater and a cold water pipe from the water meter/water main. The piping splits as it enters the house and you have two pipes running under the house. As they pass sinks, toilets, dishwashers, and outside faucets, they branch off.Cold water only;goes to toilets and outside.Hot water goes to washing machine,Dishwasher, and bath/sink/showers.They connect inside the walls to the back of the faucets. When you turn the knobs it lifts a small rubber washer plugging a brass hole in the faucet, and the water flows. It then passes the gap between the faucet and Drain and either goes to a concrete tank under ground behind the house or the city sewer main to be cleaned, before going back to the lake or river where it came from. The hot water heater has a thermostat, like your furnace that senses drops in water temperature turning the burner on the hot water heater on.It's adjustable,so you only use what you need. There's also a pop off valve in case the tank tries to explode when heating.

There is a diverter in single handle faucets that changes the flow of water. The hot and cold water supply lines are both connected below the counter. When the handle is turned to hot (or cold) the diverter opens larger on the supply line you have chosen.

Your hot water knob opens up the waterline that is connected to your hotwater heater, so hot water comes out of the tank, through the line, and out of your faucet.

You have 2 pipes from the plumbing, one is hot water from the tank and the other is unheated water(cold) Your faucet has2 pipe connections and 2 holes inside it one for each temp. When you hold the handle over the HOT the hot water is let out and the cold is cut off. When you hold over the cold, the opposite happens. When you hold halfway it gets half and half.
