Apparently it's from the old German, Bleu, from blao meaning shining. But I just got that from Wikipedia, and it has no source. I can't vouch for it.

Old Norse - Blār
Middle English - Bla
Later Middle English - Blewe

Ya. Most english words come from Latin and French. It is pretty amazing how 90% of our vocabulary comes from the "Dead language (Latin)". I think the founder language of our modern english language should be extinct. It should be back with a new blast!

It's not called "blue" in all languages. So asking your question is like asking "Why is that animal called a dog? or, "Why is that growth called a tree?"
