Fact is we must realize we are in a long, long struggle against a group of people that want to destroy us......DESTROY.........If we left Iraq in the next twenty minutes or next year or the next five years after that the same people or their successors would still want to destroy us. The world has changed and we are still thinking that this war will end.....folks, there is no end in sight.....we will be in a struggle with these people for the foreseeable future...makes no difference if the fight is in Baghdad, London, Indianapolis, Charleston, Paris, Munich, Dearborn or wherever......these people will not quit and we are fools if we think leaving Iraq will end anything.

Here is a truism: God is always on the side of the heaviest artillery. The Winner writes the history books....so do we want them written in English or Arabic?

You know we do have a choice....Think your wife or girlfriend will look good in a Burka?

Oh god...

"Stay the course"...

How long do you want the American taxpayer to continue footing this failed enterprise? 10 more years? 20? 30?

You people really need to start looking at alternatives to fighting a war without end--and ADMIT that your strategies aren't working!

The smart man wouldn't continue trying to play "Whack-A-Mole"--after he's lost all but 50 cents in his pocket.

So what makes you think that military force is the answer--after all that has been said and done by the military from the last 4.5 years?

Do you really believe that 30,000 more worn out troops--pulled from their endless tours of duty--is going to be able to halt an embedded Sunni insurgency? Or the Shiite militias?

We do not need any proof that this enemy "is very determined" - their attacks are commonly a suicide mission - one cannot get much more determined than that.
I suspect that the enemy will counter any strategy that sends a message of possible victory back to the U.S. in an asserted effect to diminish this news and provide more fodder for the anti-war activists in this country. They are fully aware that they cannot succeed in ever defeating the United States in a purely military fashion, but they are also fully aware that they can win a public relations battle with the "anti-war at any cost" crowd in this country and succeed in getting our troops withdrawn - thus assuring them a victory.
It's happened before - and they know it.

The surge was, to put it mildly, ill-timed.

If the function of the surge is to give the Iraqi government even more time to get its act together, would it not have been better to wait until they returned from their month-long vacation?

Maybe the idea was to whittle down the U.S military like a Stalinist purge and Bush just couldn't spell.

Sadly, having the same effect though.

A few months ago we were told that the purpose of the surge was to allow government in Baghdad of haven of security so that they could reach a political reconciliation with the other factions and sects in Iraq. The Iraqi government has been falling apart lately despite the surge. I wouldn't call that a success.

You hit the nail right on the head! It's a win win situation.

Now if only the rest of America would come to this realization, then we'd be a more unified country. :)

No. The military has done it's job. All eyes are on the Iraqi government. If they fail to govern, then we are on the wrong track. If they succeed in governing, then we are on the right track.

It is proof that we are likely beating down people who want to disrupt the democratic process and are doing enough.

The purpose of the surge was to give the Iraqi politicians time to get their act together.
The Iraqi politicians went of vacation.
The surge isn't working.
