I think it's great! The ladies really appreciate it when they're older.

I think that it's polite and proper for a gentlemen to open a door for anyone. My husband holds the door open for men, women, children, strangers, friends and family alike. He will open the car door for anyone if he's approaching from the passenger side and he's leading the way.
But to answer your specific question, yes, as long as it's not done to the extreme where you have to sit in the car and wait for him to walk around to open your door and let you out, or he has to sprint ahead of you to grab the door.

We are in the middle of a family argument on this exact topic.
My stepson says teasingly that he doesn't want to insult his mother or me by not opening the door for us ( we are 55 and 57), because it is sexist. And wouldn't his father be insulted if he did open the door for him, since he is 72? Nonsense! I would prefer he act like a gentleman, even if it appears sexist, rather than like some rough character. Yes it is polite, especially when it is your mother, grandmother wife or girlfriend.
What would the world be like if we stopped helping people?

I don't really make a big deal about it but it is really nice when a guy opens the door for a lady. It's those little things that breaks our heart.

Yes, and I wish a lot more things were still proper and done that aren't anymore. Tired of hearing about women's rights and why men don't do those things anymore.

Yes, very much so.
I'm a woman, but I open doors for both genders. (Although the really polite guys will not allow this and insist on holding the door open for me instead!) :)

yes. although the tradition comes from a time when doors were very large and very difficult for a woman to operate, i believe it is a sign of respect even with our easily operated doors. i also like it when a guy carries my stuff for me. im strong and very capable--and my friends know this--their responses? A asked me consistently to carry his books and D carried my computer and books for me. now, who do i feel more loved and respected by? D. and, yes they can do it for a woman who is not their crush/girlfriend/spouse etc.
