I started at a job 2 yrs ago. I started at minumum wage well i have finally made it to 7$ an hour. Well i find out minumum wage went up to 5.85 so its like i worked two years and only gained 1.15. Would it be fair to ask my boss for the extra 70 cents, or should i just hush. I dont think its fair. Should he have changed my rate of pay or does he not have to?

You can always ask, but don't expect it.

There is a misconception that a minimum wage increase, will cause everyones pay to go up. It doesn't.

Your boss is only obligated to give you more if you are making less than the new minimum wage.

If you get the $.70, I want it too. That way we'll all be exactly where we were before the law went into effect--except now prices will go up to cover the higher cost of employment and nothing at all will come of it. At least, I'll still be getting my fair share of what I earned instead of losing earning power so that those at the bottom of the heap get a raise. I'm like you. . .I don't want to lose. . .I've put in the time and effort and think that raising the minimum wage is just a vote getter.

An employer does not have to increase the wage just because the minimum went up. An employer is not obligated to give a yearly raise either. It is up to the individual employer and the amount of money the company makes. It is a misunderstood statement that an employer has to increase salaries. The only time is when the minimum is greater than what he is paying his employees.

A normal raise is usually between 2 and 3% a year. He does not have to increase your pay because the mimimum wage went up unless you were below $5.85

If you are a good employee, go ahead and ask for a raise! If he wants to keep the staff happy, he will give you a raise~! If he doesn't give you a raise and you're a good employee and you quit, he'd have to spend a whole lot of time to train other employees who may not work there as long as you etc. It's in his best interest to give you a raise and to keep you happy!
Hope this helps and good luck!

I'm not sure what state you are in, but most states the min wage is $6.85. I would definitely ask for a raise. The worst your boss can do is say no...and if he does, look for another job. You are going to have to ask for raises all your life...most places don't just give them to you. You have to speak up for yourself.
