For sure Joyce is a tough read. It surely takes patience. Finnegan's Wake with its footnotes can be maddening to read. Currently, I have heard a lot of people having trouble getting through Thomas Pynchon's Against The Day. Personally, one of the toughest books I ever read was Nick Tosches In the Hand of Dante. Don't ask me why but that book drove me nuts. Pax - C

I never hacked Finnegans Wake, but the hardest to read in intelligible English is Clarendon's History of the Rebellion, because the sentences really are long sentences, and if you lose the thread, you're lost for a whole paragraph. Hooker's Ecclesiastical Polity is similar. Both great books though, and they have something to say to those who will put in the effort.

EDIT: Seems everyone beat me to it while I was writing my reply. Oh well, at least we all agree...

I haven't seen the movie but in my opinion the hardest book in the English language would have to be James Joyce's "Finnegans Wake" followed closely by his "Ulysses". The difficulty stems mainly from his "stream of consciousness" style of writing and the fact that he packed in every conceivable form of literary technique you can think of.

To this day there are some literary scholars who aren't entirely sure that Finnegans Wake wasn't just an elaborate hoax by Joyce.

I totally agree with the answer before mine! James Joyce was brilliant and I love reading him, but his books are not light reading!

It's Finnigan's Wake. Are you going to read it? Good luck. I had trouble with the freaking Scarlet Letter. I've never read Finnigan's Wake.

Thar she "Moby Dick" blows. I have not read Joyce but I could never finish Melville's Moby Dick. It is a difficult and dry read...
