Is there any specific knowledge I'll need (Like say a college education), if so where can i get it? And what would be a good ship to start on, I live on the Oregon coast, and tall ships often come through here.

contact the American Sail Training Association,,,,they are the link to the 100 or so Tall Ships that work American waters.......

college wont do much good.......I ran a 100 ton schooner in the Caribbean after school and there was no application for what I learned in class.........

get as much sailing experience as you can on anything, no matter what size.....that helps a lot.......

and as another poster said, volunteer for a ship..there's always a million things to do aboard the ship or in the office.....people who a) show up b) work hard especially as c) non paying volunteers get selected as crew

Californian works out of San Francisco, the Irving Johnson and Electra Johnson out of San Diego.....but the real center for old ship/traditional sailing stuff on the West Coast is Port Townsend on down to Seattle.

Hope this helps!

The US COAST GUARD Acedemy has a tall ship 'THE EAGLE' that they use for training officers. DO a google search for the USCG ACADEMY.

Some cities, like Galveston,TX, have tall ships as museums. They may look for volunteers to help work and in retrun for your labor and time, they can train you to be a crew member and maybe get a chance to sail when/if they take the tall ship out.

Good luck!

Why not join the Navy, until you get your crew together and take over the ship. Arrrrrrrrrrr!
