Your word against his is at least 100 times better than his word against nothing. If you don't go, he will most likely get all charges dropped. The police are on your side in this one, the least you can do is be on you own side, too.
You don't need a lawyer, but having one would not hurt, it depends on how much damage you received, talk to your insurance agent, they may provide one for free.

you are the witness ... go.

if you do not show up, he gets off free. And then his insurance company might decide that maybe it isn't as liable to damages as you'd like. [if he has insurance]

what you hope for is that this idiot loses it in front of the judge ... which will lead everyone in the courtroom to realize that he's a lying bully. then the case will be over and he'll be found guilty.

btw, if you are so lucky that he threatens you in front of the judge, you need to immediately ask the court for an order of protection. [an order requiring him to stay away from you at all times.]

The case directly involves you, of course you have to go. Sounds like you are the star witness.
Get in there, say your piece and get that nutjob off the road. He needs discipline and punnishment.

It will be ok, you'll do just fine :0)

Sounds to me like you're a witness -- they need your word on the record to lock this guy up, and after what he did to you, making sure he goes away is the least you can do. Man up and go to court.
