First, Harry Potter is not proof of such a statement. JKR only accounts for 7 books. Just 7!

It may be that, as a woman, you find female authors to be better than male authors because you can relate to their stories better.

Don't believe all that hogwash some other answers gave about women being better at English than men, or reading more than men. To the best of my knowledge there are no statistics suggesting this even on a *cultural* level, let alone on a genetic one.

Also ignore those answers about how many great books have been written by great men in the past. In the not-so-distant past, it was unusual for a woman to attain the education necessary to become an accomplished author. Likewise, in the even more recent past, it was considered a man's job.

So what does that leave us with, *really*? Are women better writers than men? I could recommend Grisham, King, etc. etc. Then someone else would mention McCaffrey, Kurtz, JKR, etc. etc. What do I get when I search for bestselling authors? Here is the most bona-fide site I could find - http://archives.cnn.com/1999/books/news/12/31/1990.sellers/index.html - only 1 of the top 5 authors is a woman, and only 1 of the top ten books.

Again, what does that tell us?

Only that men still dominate the world of authoring books. Does that mean that men are better authors? Of course not! Does that mean that women have to work twice as hard and be twice as good to make it as an author? Of course not! Does that mean that men are naturally more gifted as authors than women? Of course not!

All it means is that more men *are* authors, and naturally, as a consequence, more of the bestselling authors are men.

Sorry to disappoint you, but there is no evidence that women are better authors than men. Just fewer.

I think some of the bigger sellers are by women because women read more. This does not mean that the books by women are better than those by men. Biggest proof, Harry Potter, which I think is not an example of good writing yet flies off the shelves. If you start listing famous authors, *a lot* of men come to mind.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that the large majority of writers and thinkers considered "great" in respect to ability and insight are male (ie. D.H. Lawrence, Bill Shakespeare, John Milton, Dante, James Joyce, etc. etc. etc.). This is by no means necessarily an indication that men are better writers, but that writing was largely considered a man's profession for so long. Personally, I'm not a big fan of most female writers that I can think of.

What other proofs can you provide? I enjoy reading women authors, but I think men authors wright just as well. Many of the most famous books in the world were written by men. You have an opinion. Yahoo! Answers is not the place to post opinions and pose them as questions.

You picked what I think should be viewed as a controversial author to base your statement on.

I think most of the ideas in JK's books can be pointed out in earlier classic novels. Also I think there is absolutely no comparison between HP and Tolkien's LOTR series.

There are some great female writers however. For example check out Octavia E. Butler Sci-Fi/Fantasy works. There are few better that her.

I think so also. I think girls are more watchful and better with showing feelings and details.

Here is another good book written by a woman.
Alanna: The First Adventure (Song of the Lioness Series #1)
by Tamora Pierce

I WOULD say that girls are better at everything (it's obvious, right? lol), but I realize that would be wrong....

I don't think girls are necessarily better at writing then guys, but since I take it you're a girl, I think that women enjoy books written by women more then guys do. And vice versa. So, since you are a girl (I am pretty sure), naturally a lot of your favorite books are by females.

Who said girls have more imagination? That's your opinion. I know a lot of guys can be immature and stupid, but a lot of us have good imagination.
Take me for example. I'm a kid and people automatically label me as stupid when they see me. But what they don't know is that I'm in advanced classes and have a high reading level. Just because we're guys does not mean we're stupid.

So listen here. You have no proof that girls have more imagination and a better vocabulary!
