today my football coach handed papers to the players with rules on them
two of the rules were no facial hair and no earings
meaning we can even wear our earing up at the school!!!
do you think he's within his limits to do something like this or no?
and i dont really have my ears pierced they're magnetic stud things
and im considering just wearing them anyway and pulling them off quickly when i see a coach.
what do you think of that?
and as far as the facial hair thing, well i havent really grown much of a beard yet but im trying to and want to keep it so i guess ill just play that by ear.
im 16 by the way in high school ill be 17 in a couple of months just FYI

Quit the team, that'll teach him a lesson. Oh wait, no it won't, just another punk he won't have to deal with. High school sports is about learning about life. Society has rules also, rules sometimes we don't like, get used to it, it's part of life. He's trying to teach you how to follow rules. He will also see who is willing to sacrifice for the team. Are you willing to sacrifice for the team? Doesn't sound like it, sounds like you think you know better.

Yes. I was on a high school track team that had a no facial hair policy. If you want to be on the team, do what the coach wants. Playing high school sports is a privilege, not a "right." What I think of this is that you are at an age where you need to learn that, in order to be a part of certain organizations, you have to comply with their rules. If you insist on being loyal to your "rugged individualism" fine. But 25 years from now when you are making $10 an hour somewhere, have three visible tattoos, facial piercings, etc. and wonder why you never got your "big break," look in the mirror and stop wondering.

Follow the rules. If you don't want to follow the rules, quit the team. Your choice. But you have to live with the consequences of your choice.

It's simple. If you want to play, you'll play by the coach's rules. If you don't like the rules - quit. If you think you're going to pull a fast one on your coach, you won't. He'll figure out your magnetic stud trick quick then he won't trust you. Once your coach stops trusting you, your playing time will suffer.

The NY Yankees have the same policy and Johnny Damon shaved off his facial hair. I'm pretty certain that if a 34 year old All-Star and World Champion can put his ego aside and abide by the team rules a 16, nearly 17, year old boy can do the same.

First of all high school sports are a PRIVILAGE not a RIGHT. Secondly he is trying to teach you a life lesson as well as building a team environment. Get over it and get with the program. Like one of the other people posted on here, look at all the people out there with mulitply peircings, VISIBLE tattos etc etc etc that complain that they havent been given their big break yet. Look I have 6 tats, none are visible with a short sleeve shirt and pants on, the reason, I liked the tats but I realized that I wanted a good job one day. Fast foward to the present I am 35 years old and I am an engineer at an automotive plant. With a nice office and a great salary. I can wear short sleeves to work and not feel as if I'm being harrased.
I know at 16 its hard to understand but if you follow the rules and get with the team when you are a little older not only will you understand you will thank that coach one day.

While I say do as he says, at least ask him what it has to do with playing football. Does it affect your playing, or his coaching? As long as it is not in practice, or in a game it is one thing. However, if he tells you can't wear them in school, yet the school doesn't have a rule against it, then he is in violation.

Remeber it is not HIS team, it is the SCHOOL'S. His name doesn't appear on the helmets and jerseys. He is just a control freak, who is probably taking out his micsconceptions about earrings and facial hair on the team.

Neither automatically condemns you to a life of making $10/hour. I have facial hair and used to wear earrings (that is really a fad dude, no real man wears them after 25 anyways) and I have a Master's and, a secure and prosperous careeer. In the end, I say do what he wants if you have to play. Nevertheless, someone should question his motivation for the rules. Good luck...and Take State!!!

Unfortunatly you have to follow his rules to play. But it sounds like you have one of those coaches that is trying to rid the world of all the things he personally doesnt like. Only those types of coaches demand things like that from players.

Earrings and facial hair have nothing to do with how you will perform on the field. Go to your coach and ask him to explain his reason for asking this of his player. do so in a respecful fashion. If he is any type of a real coach or man for that matter he will have no problem with you wanting to know why.

Then decide if you are willing to follow his rules or not. If not leave the team.

You are seeing the issue for yourself and the coach is seeing these issues from a team perspective. He needs you guys to be well-respected in the school and community. It is less about earrings and facial hair than about public image. There might be nothing wrong with it but what is best. He needs you guys to help everyone be a fan. He needs you to not only look clean cut but act clean cut. He needs you to look respectable, act respectful, and be respected. He's right on. There is plenty of time in life for facial hair and earrings but being part of that high school team is a short-lived and awesome experience. Do everything you can to promote that team and your coach.

For some reason high school football coaches think that they rule the high school world. When in actuality they are worthless people with big ego's. The best thing to do is play by his rules, cuz if your coach is anything like mine was your whole team will pay for it at the end of practice not just you.

He's the coach, it's his team, it's his rules. Follow the rules or don't play. Simple as that. Why does an almost 17 year old want earrings (magnetic or not) anyway?

Nothing
Just follow them.
Football is not a democracy
Coach is your daddy
Rules build team work
if no one followed the rules, then why have only four downs.
Try running a sweep with a bunch of guys that only block who ever they want to.
When you step on that field you step on as a team. You all followed the same rules and have the same focus.
Follow the rules, enjoy the game
let coach decide what's fair and not.
