Of course he WASN'T an odd choice. Who else could play that character. Any true Johnny Depp fan would realize that he is a master at weird characters. That is his forte. I can't even think of a movie where he has played a "normal" character. I mean look at his resume: Benny and Joon, Sleepy Hollow, Gilbert Grape, Don Juan, and so on. Willy Wonka is as weird as a character can get. An eccentric man boards up his candy factory from the rest of the world and employs an army of orange aliens to do his bidding.

Honestly I don't know why they had to remake the movie at all. The original was a classic and still held up. But, since Tim Burton was directing it, no Depp wasn't an odd choice at all. Burton is known for his dark films...Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride and countless others, many of which Depp was in. It's been clear that Depp is one of his favourite leading men to work with and he knew Depp could carry off the twisted side of Willy Wonka. (You do see some of that side of him in the original with Gene Wilder, Burton just decided to play that angle up.)

If he were to direct a happy sunny version of the film, people would think he'd gone nuts because that's simply not his style.

when johnny depp portrays a certain role in a movie, you can feel he gives it all. he's not an actor anymore but the character itself. edward scissorhands maybe a bit weird movie to some but the way he portrays the monster will make you cry, so innocent yet endearing. he being the wonka guy is very much deserved as well. he's facial expression, even just a look will say it all, he's one of the few actors who can deliver a scene without a dialogue and yet so intense and you'll just nod, meaning you understood what the message was.

YES!!..he was NOT the right person. He didnt even sing! How can you have a Willy Wonka that doesnt sing? And Tim Burton was the WORST director they could have picked. He totally ruined that movie . It was Burton's idea to have all the Umpalumpas to be the same person. All the weird scenes like the one when all the dolls catch on fire was his idea

Given his ability to play oddball characters, I wouldn't say he was an odd choice. I just don't think his portrayal of Willy Wonka really hit the mark.

Well, he doesn't usually play that type of character, but with the right make up he makes a perfect Willy Wonka. He is so eccentric and weird in that movie, it's just the way it should be.

Johnny Depp was an odd choice...but then again the movie was made by Tim Burton who is a little odd himself.

Yes he was an odd choice, but that's why he was picked. They wanted an odd and funny movie, and he could give it to them.

No, I think that he did a good job of redoing Gene Wilder's role. It's truer to the book, too.
