I am not a lawyer but I lived in Illinois and got my divorce in Wisconsin. (1991) You have to be a resident for at least 6 months before you can file. You will pay more for the papers to be served in another state. They will try three times and charge you each time if they are not served.
My ex lived in Illinois when I served him his walking papers but I had a sister that could do such a thing so he was very surprised when she handed them to him. It also did not cost me anything. She loved every minute of it.
I looked up this site and it has some more information you can read up on.
Good Luck, you have a rough road ahead of you.

You might have to google it or copy and paste it to you browser. I did not use this site, I paid over 5000.00 for my divorce from a lawyer that did not believe in Divorce but did mine anyway. ( I was very young)
