He has been with me for 4 years plus.

I always respected his right to be be like me. A Loner.

He was a friend. I know this all sounds corny, but he never asked for anything more than food.

4 years is a ripe old age for a Betta. Congrats on giving him a long life.

Now go out and get yourself another little fishey guy. Your old guy would have wanted you to adopt another one.
The little girl bettas can be very adorable too but you still have to keep them separate ;0)

Your tank is 10 gallons. Bettas should have at least 5 gallons for the best home, but an aquarium simply can't be too large for them. The important part is that the aquarium is decorated to suit the betta. A 50 gallon tank with no decoration would be a horror show for a betta, but a 50 gallon tank brimming with plants would be a paradise. Goldfish are very messy and grow huge. ALthough they are constantly bought for bowls and small tanks, they are also constantly killed at a young age. Your filter if never opened, is worth trying. Heaters are cheaper for smaller tanks, but not that much cheaper. For this tank you are speaking of, you can do a nice mini-community. 1 betta, 4 pygmy corydora catfish, some shrimp, maybe a nerite snail. However, since you are new to fish I would advice starting out with just a betta and some plants - keep it simple and build up more as you get used to the hobby and figure out feeding and maintenance and stuff. That wiki page has some pretty lousy suggestions for a beginner, and includes a couple of fish that actually do not do well in small tanks even though the fish themselves are small. You can use it for a general idea, but I don't advise blindly following it. Anyone can cut and paste from an unreliable website, that's not really advice from experience is it. er and yea, 15 gallons would be the right one. Still the same for your stocking choices however.

A 4 year old betta is an old betta. You took very good care of him. I know how ya feel, when a betta dies I feel like a friend was lost.

I have one right now thats 3-4 years old and frisky as a 6 month old :)

Hi, I'm sorry ot hear of your loss but you have done well, 4 is a good age for a Betta. As you don't mention anything odd about his behaviour or appearance my guess would be simply old age so I'm sure he had a great life with you. It doesn't sound corny at all, fish are great!

You kept him alive for a long time. Good job! As for 4 years with todays declining quality in beta stock is really great.
Pets are our friends and if you care for it a fish can be as much friend as a dog or a cat. So congrats on keeping your beta alive and well until finally he died of old age. Good job and I'm sorry to hear about it.

Awww, that's so sad.
You Betta probably died of old age.
Betta's can only live about 3-4 years.
I'm sorry to hear that he died

Im sorry about your fish...i know what it's like because you get used to it swimming to you and being nice to you and begging...lol...and then it goes...its kinda sad... but 4 years is an EXCELLENT lifespan for a betta...Some people cant keep them alive for a week....because they dont know how to care for them....Just be glad for the time you had your fish and you will soon get over it...remember..each fish has their own personalities...so yea....dont buy a fish to replace him...just buy a new fish to love and care for like you did him and keep him in your memories... hope this helps :-)

Sorry for your loss and no, it's not corny at all.
