This theory is incorrect. Yes, I have thought about it before. But it is not merely incorrect merely because I disagree, because I don't disagree. We all, at times, feel that we should have done something a certain way to prevent adverse situations from arising.
But the fact is, that time is a set continuum of events. If one thing changed about that continuum, then it would cease to exist all together. In other words, if a particular event does not happen at a particular time, then time ceases to be time and becomes something altogther different.
So, if you did something in the past. If you were to undo that thing, the entirety of existence would change into something completely different. There is a one in an infinitum chance that time as we know it would still exist.

Of course events that happen in your life influence the course you take. How can anyone think otherwise? I had planned on raising my family and growing old with my beloved wife. A car wreck recently took that away from me. I once had a possible future in sports but an injury set me on another path. If I had chosen a different college I would probably never met my wife. The list is practically endless.
It's obvious that events help determine our fate. You just have to do the best with what you have and try to make right decisions as they present themselves. They say hindsight is 20/20. Well, that's pretty accurate. But you can't live your life regretting the choices in your past. Believe me, you don't want to do that to yourself. "What if I had told her to wait a minute." Just a minute or a few seconds and the wreck wouldn't have occurred. See what I mean? Don't do it.
By the way, it's an old concept and many have lived by it but it's tough to do. Worrying yourself to death about every little decision and then blaming yourself when something bad occurs. Sh** happens and we gotta live with it. Just do what's right and let the chips fall where they may. At least you'll have a clear conscience. Good luck.

Actually, there is something similar to this called string theory. This is the theory that there are 10, maybe more, different dimensions in which time and space exist. I can only understand up to the fifth dimension, and it's similar to what you are saying.
We live in the third dimension. the Forth dimension is a single time line. If someone were to look at you in the forth dimension, they would see a long, snake like thing, at one end being your birth and the other end being you dead. the Fifth dimension is time as well, but where the forth dimension is a single time line, the fifth dimension is every possible time line according to chance and personal decisions.
there is a video in my sources you should watch.
As for living by your theory, I wouldn't recommend it. Yes it is true, small events can alter your future in dramatic ways, as small events in your past effect you now. But it is impossible to know what will affect what how. IMPOSSIBLE. The best you can ever do is guess. My suggestion is to simply live by the life you have now, and do not dwell on what could have been or what might be. Something small could make your life dramatically better, but according to the same chance, something small could make your life dramatically worse as well. It's just impossible to know.

Its pretty obvious that one event, even a small event can change your future dramatically. As much as one tick on a compass would change where you ended up if you followed its heading for a few miles.
Tell me then, how could you live by a theory about small events changing your future, or against it?
Seems to me what happens happens. And getting up everytime you trip, trying to contemplate what you would be doing had the fall not interrupted your stride and train of thought would be useless, you'd only be furthering yourself from the future that could have been and going even further down the presumed "fork" you've just created.

Oh, I definitely believe that one event can change everything.
Even casting aside the "close calls" I've had that would have ended my life a while back, I've passed on job opportunities that would have changed everything. Some not necessarily for the better.
Who knows how many little things could make huge differences.
That's why I'm a Libertarian. We SHOULD have these choices, rather than have them made for us. Of course choices we make today determine what happens later, that's the whole fun of Life, so each of us should be free to make as many choices as we can.

most definitly.
every past event we experianced created the person we are.the present creates the future WHO we will be.
im sure there are meaningless events that dont add a lot,but id hesitate to venture what they were.
kind of like with the computer, every bit of input no matter how small is important ,maybe not by itself but gatherd together with all the other small input , it grows and becomes new input.
there are a lot of unpleasant events in my past, but given the chance to change or even delete them I wouldnt. because who I am now ,likes where I am now.
Id be afraid of tampering with that.
do I worry a lot about making the right choices? no, but I do make better choices .back to my computer analogy .Ive learned whats important and what just takes up space .that way my files arent filled up with useless crap.right priorities are important , being true to yourself and those you love.
sometimes it doesnt even involve me ,life happens and we grow through it.
peace><>

How can you possible know if that event changed your future? Maybe another event changes it back to what it should have been. All we have is the present. The past only exists in our memories, and the future has yet to happen.
Live for today, and hope for tomorrow.

i think you should hurry up and break up with your friend cuz obviously its not doing you any good. And no the universe fullcircles and what was going to happen will happen even though it might be slightly different. so yea you might have met those people but through someone else. you wouldnt have changed.

I dont think that any event changes your life ro your future. I believe its how we react and the the descisions we make at the time of the event that change us and our future.
