Hi guys and girls, just found this little critter in my room, I'm panicking that it is a cockroach but I can't really find one that looks simlar although I've just read that there are over 300 types, it has a round head, then a square bit behind that then and oval shape, very similar to a cockroach, its a dark reddy brown in colour and has quite shorts antennas (is that what they're called?) from what i can see its legs arent hairy like i think they would be if it was, i hope to god this is just a beetle! Please see the link to the pictures, thanks alot! Jess

I'm not a bug expert or anything but, that looks like a beetle.. Harmless- it may have just been exploring.. However, if you are worried go to Home Depot, Lowe's, Target etc... and get some Ortho Home Defense and spray that along the outside perimeter of the house as well as the perimeter of all the rooms inside.. Just read the directions carefully and be careful of children/pets.. You may have to buy a few gallons depending on the size of your house... This kills ANY bugs coming around the house... So, it's should do the trick.. Good luck

First of all, roaches are beetles, including cockroaches. Second of all, this is most certainly NOT a cockroach, or any roach. It's probably a wood boring beetle of a sort.

They're right. It's a beetle. My question, though: why would you be scared of a cockroach. If you're relieved that it is a beetle, you're still dealing with an insect. Really, what's the difference? Why be afraid of either one?

Defiantly a beetle. The rounded wing covers are a give-away.

Yes, they are all 100% sure, and so am I (biologist). This is a beetle (Coleoptera) and absolutely not a Roach (Blatteridae). No idea what species, there are gazillions of them. Might be a wood beetle.

These are some of the more common cockroaches. In the UK, they're mainly brown or black.
