Are sushi boats faster or slower around corners?

At a sushi boat restaurant where they use the water current to move the sushi boats, the boats bunch up around the corners. Is this because they're speeding up around corners? Slowing down? Or because of the space for turning.

If you're thinking of a tank's track being twice as fast at the top - it's different.
