Is there a common reason the abs light comes on? Could it be just a relay or something or something major. I jammed on brakes on purpose to see if it was a false indication and definetly the abs is not working. 75000 miles on truck.

When the light comes on it means the ABS system is not working but you will still have safe brakes. Sometimes the little electric solenoid that controls the "pumping action" will lock up or just fail and need to be replaced.
It is a good idea to have your brakes bled every two years so you continuously purge the "dark" brake fluid which turns dark due to suspended metals in the fluid and some moisture in some cases. When you bleed the brakes you not only flush out the master cylinder but the brake cylinders and calipers, hoses and steel lines. New fluid does what it is supposed to do, provide hydraulic pressure to the calipers and cylinders without any residue to create additional wear when you hit the brakes. In two years time you might hit the brakes 10,000 times.
The ABS system isn't critical to the safe function of the car. It only functions as designed on wet pavement and that's it. It does nothing on dry ground or ice and snow. Hard braking on dry pavement may cause the ABS to react on the rear wheels but this is most often when people notice an ABS malfunction most likely due to increased stress on the system verses wet pavement when the tires slide easily.
The only cars that I have seen that do not seem to function properly when the ABS light comes on are Dodge/Chrysler vehicles. Whether this is an engineering screw up or just an over all worn out brake system is anyones guess. The brakes have to work with or without the ABS in working order.
Good Luck!

It could be coming on because your brakes need maintenance, but usually on newer cars it comes on whenever the abs is initiated if you have to slam on the brakes at the last minute. If they dont need maintenance then somethings wrong with you're car. Either way it could probably be fixed. However, unless you notice the car doing something different when the light comes on then when it was off then it shouldnt need to be repaired. Personally I would get it checked out for the hell of it.

Most common problems are a wheel speed sensor fault or ABS control module. Pull some codes and go from there.

Check out the ABS module under the hood. If it's buzzing, then this is the problem. It can be removed and repaired (check on ebay). This is a common problen for an S 10.

My car just did this last month and I guess it has something to do with the air flow in the car! Take it to a shop and see if that could be a possibility. It's about 300 dollars to fix!!!!
